    Description

    Although lead has been associated with hearing loss in occupational settings and in children, little epidemiologic research has been conducted on the impact of cumulative lead exposure on age-related hearing loss in the general population. We determined whether bone lead levels, a marker of cumulative lead exposure, are associated with decreased hearing ability in 448 men from the Normative Aging Study, seen between 1962 and 1996 (2264 total observations). Air conduction hearing thresholds were measured at 0.25-8 kHz and pure-tone averages (PTA) (mean of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz) were computed. Tibia and patella lead levels were measured using K X-ray fluorescence between 1991 and 1996. In cross-sectional analyses, after adjusting for potential confounders including occupational noise, patella lead levels were significantly associated with poorer hearing thresholds at 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 kHz and PTA. The odds of hearing loss significantly increased with patella lead levels. We also found significant positive associations between tibia lead and the rate change in hearing thresholds at 1, 2, and 8 kHz and PTA in longitudinal analyses. Our results suggest that chronic low-level lead exposure may be an important risk factor for age-related hearing loss and reduction of lead exposure could help prevent or delay development of age-related hearing loss.

    Description

    This dataset includes 210Pb (dpm g) and bulk carbon (mg/ml) data from four 20-cm sediment cores collected in South Bay, Virginia. Two of the cores were collected in 2011, one from within the restored Zostera marina (eelgrass) meadow and one from a nearby bare site. The other two cores were collected in 2014 from a different meadow site and a different bare site. Both meadow cores were collected within original restoration seed plots. The SB-5 bare core was collected north of the restored meadow. The 2-bare core was collected west of the meadow, near Man and Boy Channel. 210Pb and carbon profiles from the meadow sites were used to establish meadow carbon accumulation rates in 2011 and 2014, respectively. Bare areas in this system appear to be non-depositional. Excess 210Pb was not observed in the profiles from the two bare cores.

    Description

    This data release includes whole rock geochemical data, and uranium-lead isotopic data collected by both Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe-Reverse Geometry (SHRIMP-RG) methods. Whole rock geochemistry was collected by Activation Laboratories in Ancaster, Ontario. LA-ICP-MS data was collected at the PLASMA at the USGS in Denver, Colorado. SHRIMP-RG data was collected at the USGS-Stanford SHRIMP-RG in Palo Alto, California. Rock samples for all methods were collected by Mark Carter of the USGS. The whole rock geochemistry and uranium lead isotopic data constrain the age and origin of rocks in the newly defined Dinwiddie Terrane of eastern Virginia.

    Description

    The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) is located on the southernmost tip of the Delmarva Peninsula in Northampton County, Virginia. It consists of a variety of habitats including maritime forest, grasslands, fresh and brackish ponds, tidal salt marsh, and beach. The Refuge is considered “one of the most important avian funnels along the east coast” (Bright and Sagan, 1987); it provides outstanding foraging and sheltering habitat for migrating avian species and productive nursery grounds for fish. In 2001, the Refuge purchased 375 acres of salt marsh down range of the Northampton County small firearms range. The firing range, a two acre in-holding within the Refuge, was formerly owned by the Department of Defense and is presumed to have been active since the 1930s. In this study, we investigated contaminant levels in soils and sediments in the marsh down range of the firing range and along the Virginia Inside Passage to assess whether contaminants are present at levels that would pose an ecological threat. Samples were also collected from the marsh for lead shot or bullet density determination to assess whether lead ingestion would pose a threat to birds or other biota. Lead shot or bullets were not found in any sediment samples. Only one sample, from the marsh, exceeded the lead Effects Range Low (ERL) level, but it was below the Effects Range Median (ERM) and Probable Effect Levels (PEL). Arsenic was above the ERL level in seven of the eight marsh samples but did not approach either ERM or PEL levels. Nickel was above the ERL level in two of the eight marsh samples, but was below the ERM and PEL values. Five organic compounds - acenaphthene, anthracene, dieldrin, DDE, and total PCBs - were detected above their ERL levels. Only two of those analytes, dieldrin and DDE, were above their ERM levels. Of the two samples in which dieldrin was above the ERL, only one was above the PEL. The DDE level was above the ERM level in one marsh sample. This study indicates the soil and sediment pose no threat to wildlife from lead or other contaminants levels and there is no risk of lead poisoning to wildlife via ingestion. The few cases in which contaminant levels were elevated are localized and do not pose a widespread threat to biota. The ERL is a conservative level and although some levels were higher than the ERL, the risk those levels pose to wildlife is negligible.

    The Virginia Water Protection Program (VWP) regulates activities in all surface waters which includes wetlands, streams, and open water. A permit (general permit coverage or individual permit) may be required in accordance with program regulations and State Water Control Law. This layer represents the project location of both active and historic VWP General Permit Coverage (GP) issued across the state. The General Permit Tracking number, name, and regional office are among several attributes in this layer. The attribute data is pulled from DEQ's Comprehensive Environmental Data System (CEDS). The GIS data layers and maps produced by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are provided as a public resource. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has attempted to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the data.     Description

    A series of congeners structurally related to pritelivir, N-[5-(aminosulfonyl)-4-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl]-N-methyl-2-[4-(2-pyridinyl)phenyl]acetamide, a helicase-primase inhibitor for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, was prepared. The synthesized primary and secondary sulfonamides were investigated as inhibitors of six physiologically and pharmacologically relevant human (h) carbonic anhydrase (hCA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms, the cytosolic enzymes hCA I and II, the mitochondrial ones hCA VA and VB, and the transmembrane, tumor associated hCA IX and XII. Low nanomolar inhibition KI values were detected for all of them, with a very interesting and well-defined structure–activity relationship. As many CAs are involved in serious pathologies, among which are cancer, obesity, epilepsy, glaucoma, etc., sulfonamide inhibitors as those reported here may be of interest as drug candidates. Furthermore, pritelivir itself is an effective inhibitor of some CAs, also inhibiting whole blood enzymes from several mammalian species, which may be a favorable pharmacokinetic feature of the drug which can be transported throughout the body bound to blood CA I and II.

    Description

    The Virginia Water Protection Program (VWP) regulates activities in all surface waters which includes wetlands, streams, and open water. A permit (general permit coverage or individual permit) may be required in accordance with program regulations and State Water Control Law. Additionally, the VWP Permit Program keeps record of compliance activities such as pre-application site visits, inspections, complaints, and other compliance-related actions. These categories are tracked in DEQ's Comprehensive Environmental Data System (CEDS) as “VWP Non-Permit (NP)” records. These records may or may not be associated with VWP permit records in CEDS. The site name, Non-Permit tracking number, and regional office are among several attributes in this layer. The attribute data is pulled from DEQ's Comprehensive Environmental Data System (CEDS). The GIS data layers and maps produced by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) are provided as a public resource. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has attempted to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the data. DEQ makes or extends no warranties of any type, expressed or implied, including but not limited to: appropriateness of use, accuracy, or completeness of data. DEQ does not guarantee the GIS data provided is complete or current because the information contained in these data may change over time. These data and related maps are not legal documents and should not be construed or used as such. It is encouraged that these data are obtained from a DEQ resource and not through other sources which may lead to changed or outdated data. While using DEQ GIS data, the use and modification of such data is done at the risk of the user, and where DEQ holds no liability of any nature resulting from the use or correctness of this data.
