    Description

In the parliamentary election in Sweden held in September 2022, the Social Democratic Party received the largest share of the votes, increasing their support by two percentage points compared to the previous election. However, as their cooperation partners in parliament (the Riksdag), the Left Party, the Centre Party, and the Green Party, did not receive enough seats in the legislature, the center-right block formed a government under leadership of the conservative Moderate Party.

    Controversial right-wing party

Probably the most notable story resulting from the parliamentary election was the result of the Sweden Democrats. The right-wing, anti-immigrant party has split opinions in Sweden since it first entered parliament in 2010, and initially, the other established parties refused to co-operate with them. However, before the 2018 election, the center-right parties opened the door for co-operating with the controversial party. In the 2022 election, the party became the second largest in terms of votes received and seats in parliament, capitalizing on Swede's worries about rising gang-related crime.

    High voter turnout
In the parliamentary election in 2018, as many as 87 percent of the eligible voters in Sweden casted their vote. This was one of the highest turnouts throughout the world in recent years. In 2022, the voter turnout sank by three percentage points, but was still exceptionally high compared to most other European countries.

Respectively, 18 percent and 29 percent of men responded in a survey that they would vote for these parties, compared to 16 percent each for women. On the other hand, female voters are especially overrepresented among the voters of the Social Democratic Party, with 43 percent compared to the 29 percent among male voters. Among both genders, the Social Democrats was the most popular party, but only marginally among men.

    Description

Abstract (en): The Swedish Election Study, 1960, was conducted by the Institute of Political Science, the University of Goteborg, Sweden, as part of a political behavior research program that studied Riksdag (parliamentary) elections in the period 1956-1970. This study carried out an electorate survey in two stages with two different subsamples. Respondents in Subsample A were interviewed before the election, and were asked to complete a short mail-in questionnaire after the election. Subsample B was only interviewed in the weeks immediately following the election. Information was gathered about the respondents' communities, their position and mobility within those communities, and their exposure to the information media (television, local and national newspapers, radio, magazines, and political pamphlets). Respondents were also asked to rate their interest in various topics such as crime, political news, international news, sports, editorials, and economics, and to relate their opinions on the media and these topics to the 1960 election. Questions also probed respondents' reactions to existing political issues and to the government's related policies. Demographic data include sex, marital status, year of marriage, year of birth, income, spouse's income, and family income. Swedish citizens born during the period 1880-1938 and eligible to vote. Two-stage probability sample drawn from the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics' sampling framework, consisting of a nationwide net of primary sampling units. Within 70 primary sampling units, names were drawn from population registers using a procedure that excluded persons not eligible to vote. For the purposes of this study, the resulting sample was split into two subsamples of equal size.

This dataset was created primarily for teaching purposes, enabling students to replicate original analyses but also to explore the usefulness of alternative modes of analysis or to test alternative hypotheses. The data were collected from a representative sample of the Swedish electorate at the time of the 1964 Riksdag election in Sweden. Variables ascertained the respondents' voting behavior, party affiliation, and interest in politics. Demographic information includes level of education, occupation, socioeconomic stratum, social mobility, membership in labor unions, and frequency of church attendance, as well as sex, age, and marital status. In order to facilitate the use of the data for instructional purposes, several summary classifications and variables in collapsed versions were included in the dataset.

    Description

    Description

    Description

The Swedish election study 1979 was carried out in connection with the general election in September. Many of the questions are replications of questions asked in previous election studies. In this study the respondents specifies for each political party what they appreciates and what they dislikes with the party´s policy. There is also an evaluation of party politics in different political issues, such as employment, education, child care and private enterprises. This is the first of the election studies to include a feeling thermometer, where the respondent has to position each of the political parties, as well as the party leaders, on a scale from -5 (dislikes very much) to +5 (likes very much). Since this study is the first that took place after a period of non-Social Democratic government, the respondent has to give a judgement over the two formations of Government (the three-party government 1976-1978 and the liberal government 1978-1979) which took place during this period, as well as an individual judgement of each of the parties in power and of the Social Democratic party as a opposition party. Two issues with special interest in this study are nuclear power and wage-earners´ investment fund.

    Purpose:

Explain why people vote as they do and why an election ends in a particular way. Track and follow trends in the Swedish electoral democracy and make comparisons with other countries.

There were also a number of questions on the opinions of the parties regarding: employment, environment, wage-earners´ investment fund, taxes, the Swedish economy, foreign affairs and security policy, social safety, and child care. Furthermore the respondent was asked to give marks from -5 to +5 to political parties, party leaders, and different formations of government during the last decade. Different issues to give own opinion on and parties´ position on: nuclear power, wage-earners´ investment fund, public sector, VAT on food, sickness benefit, and child care allowance.

    Description

This dataset contains 2325 sponsored political ads collected during the 2018 Swedish election campaign. The ads were crowd sourced as part of the ProPublica political ads collection initiative and presented on the website https://www.politiskannonsering.se. Volunteers for the collection were recruited in Facebook groups for journalists, mailing lists and in twitter posts. This means that the dataset does not represent all ads and may lack ads for target groups not participating in the collection. Ads were collected through a desktop browser plugin (for Chrome and Firefox). This means that no ads that were targeted at mobile users were collected. (2018-11-01)

    Description

Swedish party programs and election manifestos from 1897 until today. All documents are also open available at page: https://snd.gu.se/vivill, where it is possible to search in the documents. Swedish party programs and election manifestos builds on the "Vi vill …! Hundra år av partipolitiska viljeyttringar" ("We want…! A hundred years of political party declarations") project, which the predecessor of SND, SSD, conducted in 2000–2002. The purpose of this project was to collect the programs and manifestos that the political parties had produced during the 20th century. In these texts, you can trace the development of the political parties in terms of their language, politics, and ideology. The material also provides an overview of which questions have been essential for the development of Sweden. The selection of election manifestos builds on work done by Sven-Olov Håkansson in "Svenska valprogram 1902–1952" (”Swedish election programs 1902–1952”), and materials collected and used in the research project "Partiernas opinionspåverkan" (“Political party influence on public opinions”), POP, by Peter Esaiasson and Nicklas Håkansson. At first, only political parties in the Swedish Parliament (Sveriges riksdag) were represented in the material. Later additions have given a broader selection of parties as well as party documents related to the European Parliament elections. In the case of party programs, we have searched in research libraries and people’s movement libraries, as well as in the archives of the political parties. As there is varying degrees of knowledge about which programs have been produced, we are aware that we have probably been unable to find an unknown number of documents that could otherwise have been included in the collection. This project was made possible thanks to John-Erik Ågotnes at NSD (Norsk Samfunnsvitenskapelig Datatjenste, now SIKT), the Norwegian counterpart to SSD, which in 1997 published a CD with Norwegian party programmes. Ågotnes allowed SSD free use of the software he had developed for his project. The "Vi vill …" project was awarded financial support from the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond grant for support to research infrastructures.

    Description

The election survey was conducted in Swedish and collected after the 2007 parliamentary elections. It is part of a four-year research project exploring politics in Swedish-speaking Finland (Svensk politik i Finland - beteende, opinion, framtid (2007-20010)). First, the respondents were queried how interested they were in politics and how much they followed the parliamentary elections in different media. The respondents' identification with various groups, self-perceived social class, and the stability of their political party preference were investigated, as well as what kind of measures they would be willing to take to promote things they considered important. The respondents were also presented with a set of attitudinal statements on voting, participating in parliamentary elections, political participation, political power, institutions, the Swedish People's Party in Finland, and services provided in Swedish. Some questions pertained to the Internet. The respondents were asked whether they had signed online petitions, contacted political decision-makers, discussed politics, or participated in other discussions. Municipal elected offices and organisational participation were also charted in the survey. The respondents were also asked to indicate the performance of Matti Vanhanen's Government, and to place different political parties as well as themselves on a left-right scale. Some questions examined how well political parties had distinguished themselves during the election campaign and the functioning of democracy in Finland. In addition, the respondents were asked whether they had voted in the 2007 parliamentary elections, and if not, what the reason for abstaining from voting was. Those who had voted were asked which party they had voted, which factors had affected their party choice, and whether the candidate or the party was a more important selection criterion. The respondents also evaluated how the Government had succeeded in managing the issues related to Swedish-speaking Finns and the status of Åland. Additionally, the respondents indicated which language was spoken at their home, how well they could speak Finnish, and how satisfied they were with their financial situation and life in general. Background variables included the respondent's year of birth, gender, education, marital status, economic activity, occupational group, household size, household income, region of residence, language spoken at home, language proportion in municipality of residence, religiosity, and electoral district.
