Created by the Interregional Political Observatory (OIP) before the first election of regional councillors by universal suffrage in 1986, the interregional surveys tracked the emergence and consolidation of the regional process in public opinion from 1985 to 2004: knowledge of the region, sense of identity, embeddedness of identity, expectations regarding regional public policies. Certain questions on society and politics, as well as sociodemographic information, were repeated: interest in politics, positioning on the left-right scale, party loyalty, detailed profession of the reference individual, religious practice, educational qualifications, etc.… In 1986, the survey was conducted with 16 regional samples representative of the regional populations (regions belonging to OIP) aged 15 and above. The subject of the thematic component of the survey was “Images of the region”.

In the context of the CH@YOUPART project we are studying the political participation of young adults in Switzerland. We are particularly interested in the forms of political involvement that 18 to 25 year olds prefer and the frequency of these activities. Furthermore, we investigate why young Swiss are political active or why not. The goal of this project is to find out more about the situation in Switzerland as well as to learn if young adults in here differ in this respect from their peers in other European countries.
The active participation of the population in the political process is essential, especially for a direct democracy. Through this participation a range of opinions find entrance into the political process and policy decisions thereby obtain their legitimacy. The participation behavior of the young generation is thus crucial for the future of the political system in Switzerland. The aim of this project is therefore to obtain answers to two questions: 1. How do young adults participate politically in Switzerland? 2. How can the political participation of young adults be explained?
Thereby, we are equally interested in the politically active and non-active Swiss and the reasons for their respective behavior. The political participation of young Swiss has only been covered comprehensively in very few studies. The existing data, however, is outdated. Moreover, this data does not allow for comparisons of the political activities of 18 to 25 year olds in Switzerland with same age EU citizens. Both aspects have been taken into account in the development of the CH@YOUPART research design.
This project is conducted by the Swiss Centre of Competence in the Social Sciences (FORS) with the support of the State Secretariat for Education and Research of the Federal Department of Home Affairs.

The French Political Barometer (FPB), supported by the Ministry of the Interior and of Spatial Planning, belongs to the family of academic electoral surveys that CEVIPOF (Center of political researches of Sciences Po) had been conducting for more than 20 years (1978, 1988, 1995, 1997 and 2002), while introducing new dimensions for this kind of survey. It consisted of four waves of surveys (between March 2006 and January 2007), carried out with representative samples of French voters registered on the electoral roll and regionalised. The method provided an instrument for studying the political climate and the ways in which political opinions, judgements and behaviours were taking shape with the approach of the 2007 presidential elections. The sample size was 5600 people for each wave, making a total of 22,400 questioned, sufficient to allow detailed analyses (in particular subgroups that had been little studied because of their low numbers in the samples usually studied). Until then, the big academic electoral surveys had been based on the idea that a single, retrospective observation was sufficient to understand the dynamics within the electorate and the logics of political choice. These post-electoral surveys seemed to show that the vote was the outcome of predispositions that were simply made manifest by the elections. This model of analysis was enhanced, in 2002, by the implementation of a large panel-based survey, the “2002 French Electoral Panel”, which developed a new approach, more focused on the dynamics specific to the electoral campaign. The French Political Barometer extended this approach by taking as its starting point the idea that dynamics and changes in the electorate cannot be understood in the absence of observations made well in advance of the electoral campaign. The first wave of the FPB was conducted more than a year before the 2007 presidential elections. Each wave of the FPB consists, apart from the usual descriptive information (age, sex, profession, etc.…), of a fixed set of questions that are asked each time, and a “rotating” set that changes from one wave to another, relating to a topical subject. The...
