    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the 20 years data of U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP) 2000 - 2022. To measure the variables, namely (a) population and (b) population change in ( absolute and as a percentage ), we initially analyzed and tabulated the data for each of the years between 2000 and 2022. For further information regarding these estimates, please feel free to reach out to us via email at research@neilsberg.com.

    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Curtis population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Curtis across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2022, the population of Curtis was 839, a 2.57% increase year-by-year from 2021. Previously, in 2021, Curtis population was 818, an increase of 1.49% compared to a population of 806 in 2020. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2022, population of Curtis decreased by 8. In this period, the peak population was 940 in the year 2010. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

The wind vectors are divided into five files, names by their elevation range above sea level in the atmosphere: 00-05km.txt; 05-11km.txt; 11-16km.txt; 16-24km.txt; and 24-30km.txt. The zip folder also contains a subfolder "figures", with Wind rose plots of wind direction and speed over this time period. The plots are by season, and by elevation, given a total of 20 plots (4 seasons, 5 elevation ranges). A summary plot is also included which gives the year-round wind pattern at the volcano, at 0-5 km elevation. Plots are in both jpg and pdf format.

    Description

These data were generated for a project seeking to test the effect of spatial resolution (pixel size) of remote sensing reflectance data on the capacity for the R algorithm biodivMapR to accurately map beta biodiversity (in this case different natural communities) on natural landscapes within the southeastern U.S. Coastal Plain. The project used 1 m resolution hyperspectral data (402-2,500 nm) collected in September 2021 from airborne sensors at three National Ecological Observatory (NEON) sites aggregated to coarser resolutions for each test (1 m, 5 m, 15 m, 30 m, 40 m, 60 m, and 90 m pixels sizes). The NEON sites used were Disney Wilderness Preserve (DSNY), Jones Ecological Research Station (JERC), and Ordway-Swisher Biological Station (OSBS). Point locations within the remotely sensed scenes were established to represent known locations for specific natural community types. BiodivMapR produced Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrices composed of pairwise comparisons of point locations within each NEON site. Dissimilarity represented that of spectral species (pixel categories based on reflectance spectra) within mapping windows containing a set number of pixels and centered on each point. MRPP analyses using the dissimilarity matrices were used to determine the degree that point locations were successfully clustered by community type at each spatial resolution (pixel size). Analyses were run using assignments of 50 spectral species versus 20 spectral species per scene. The data archived are the shapefiles with geographic point data and their corresponding community types used in analyses, as well as the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrices for each site, pixel resolution, mapping window size, and number of spectral species used in each analysis.

The dataset tabulates the Curtis township population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Curtis township across the last two decades. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2022, the population of Curtis township was 1,125, a 1.44% increase year-by-year from 2021. Previously, in 2021, Curtis township population was 1,109, an increase of 1.19% compared to a population of 1,096 in 2020. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2022, population of Curtis township decreased by 252. In this period, the peak population was 1,377 in the year 2000. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description
    1. Microbiome sequencing data often need to be normalized due to differences in read depths, and recommendations for microbiome analyses generally warn against using proportions or rarefying to normalize data and instead advocate alternatives, such as upper quartile, CSS, edgeR-TMM, or DESeq-VS. Those recommendations are, however, based on studies that focused on differential abundance testing and variance standardization, rather than community-level comparisons (i.e., beta diversity), Also, standardizing the within-sample variance across samples may suppress differences in species evenness, potentially distorting community-level patterns. Furthermore, the recommended methods use log transformations, which we expect to exaggerate the importance of differences among rare OTUs, while suppressing the importance of differences among common OTUs. 2. We tested these theoretical predictions via simulations and a real-world data set. 3. Proportions and rarefying produced more accurate comparisons among communities and were the only methods that fully normalized read depths across samples. Additionally, upper quartile, CSS, edgeR-TMM, and DESeq-VS often masked differences among communities when common OTUs differed, and they produced false positives when rare OTUs differed. 4. Based on our simulations, normalizing via proportions may be superior to other commonly used methods for comparing ecological communities.

Variables / Data Columns

  • Year: This column displays the data year (Measured annually and for years 2000 to 2022)
  • Population: The population for the specific year for the Curtis is shown in this column.
  • Year on Year Change: This column displays the change in Curtis population for each year compared to the previous year.
  • Change in Percent: This column displays the year on year change as a percentage. Please note that the sum of all percentages may not equal one due to rounding of values.

Good to know

Margin of Error

Data in the dataset are based on the estimates and are subject to sampling variability and thus a margin of error. Neilsberg Research recommends using caution when presening these estimates in your research.

Custom data

If you do need custom data for any of your research project, report or presentation, you can contact our research staff at research@neilsberg.com for a feasibility of a custom tabulation on a fee-for-service basis.
